El Yaque

The Island within an Island

Until the 90’s of the 20th century El Yaque was a quiet little fishing village not even featuring an asphalted road.
This changed rapidly once the windsurfers discovered this excellent spot.

Bit by bit hotels and small pensions were built.
But the strong, and here locally reinforced, trade wind, which attracted windsurfers, kept the standard beach-tourist away.

El Yaque kept some of its original flair even though it has now a mix of natives and locals of all kinds of nationalities. This mix makes it even safer and friendlier than the rest of the island, which makes it an island within the island.
The small village has lots of nice “locals” and natives, small hotels, restaurants and shops, an internet-café, beach bars and, of course, wind.

The location between the airport and a large lagoon and national park saves El Yaque from heavy traffic, which keeps the village quiet and safe.

This all makes this place unique in Venezuela and in the world and is the reason for many happy travellers to come again and again.

El Yaque is the “headquarters” for Kiteboarding and Windsurfing.
From here, one can get quickly and easily to a variety of interesting spots on this or neighboring islands.

Beach parties and the famous Bar/Disco Los Piratas as well as the newly opened Havana Billard Club offer in El Yaque the contrast to the daily “water ballet” of kite boarders and windsurfers.

It takes about 25 minutes by taxi or 35 by bus to get into Porlamar with its low price markets, big shopping malls or for nightlife attractions like casinos restaurants, bars and discos.
